MIXING & PRODUCTION RETREAT

A studio residency for shaping your recorded music

A focused retreat for producers, mixers, engineers, and self-producing artists who want sharper ears, stronger judgment, and a deeper understanding of what a song needs after recording.

Autumn 2026 • Autumn 2027

-THE APPROACH

Mixing is not correction.
It is interpretation.

A mix decides where the listener’s attention goes.

It shapes weight, space, movement, intimacy, tension, and release. A small decision can make a vocal feel closer, a chorus feel larger, or an entire record feel more certain.

This retreat is built around learning to hear those decisions clearly — not as formulas, but as choices with consequence.

-THE FORMAT

Small-group studio work built around listening, playback, and revision.

Shared Source Material

Participants work with curated multitrack sessions, instructor-selected material, shared source sessions, and selected participant material where useful.

Because everyone is hearing the same source material, the conversation becomes more precise. Decisions can be compared clearly. The room can hear how different choices affect balance, emotional focus, movement, and translation.

Small Group Studio Work

Participants work in focused groups, making real production and mix decisions together.

This may include shaping balance, tone, space, density, vocal placement, low-end relationships, automation, arrangement choices, and overall direction. The group setting makes the decision-making process visible, giving participants a chance to hear how different ears prioritize the same material.

Instructor Guidance

Mentors guide the work through practical instruction, close listening, critique, and focused intervention.

The emphasis is not on showing a “correct” method. It is on helping participants understand why a decision works, what it changes, and whether it serves the record. Guidance happens inside the work, not around it.

Playback & Critique

Work comes back into the room for playback.

Participants listen together, compare versions, discuss what changed, and identify where the record became clearer or less focused. The critique is practical, specific, and tied to what can actually be heard.

Revision

Participants return to the material with clearer ears.

After playback and discussion, the next pass often reveals the most important lessons. Choices become more intentional. Problems become easier to locate. The work moves from instinct into judgment.

Collaborative Analysis

The room becomes a shared listening environment.

Participants learn not only from their own decisions, but from hearing how others interpret the same material. Different approaches reveal different priorities, and those differences become part of the education.

The goal is not to prove one version right.

It is to understand what each version is doing.

-THE SIGNATURE METHOD

The same songs Different records.

Different groups may shape the same source material in different ways.

One version may pull the vocal forward. Another may build the record around space. One may emphasize rhythm and weight. Another may make restraint the center of the mix.

The point is not competition.

The point is to hear how priorities change perception.

When the source stays the same, the decisions become impossible to hide.

-WHAT WE LISTEN FOR

The craft lives in the relationships.

Throughout the retreat, participants explore the decisions that shape a finished record.

This includes:

  • balance and hierarchy
  • low-end relationships
  • vocal placement
  • space and depth
  • arrangement density
  • compression and movement
  • automation
  • transitions
  • translation
  • revision judgment
  • emotional focus
  • knowing when to stop

The emphasis is not technique for its own sake. It’s consequence.

The goal is not to collect tricks. It is to develop judgment.

-WHO THIS IS FOR

For people already inside the work.

This retreat is designed for people who are already engaged with recorded music and want to make stronger decisions inside the process.

It is a strong fit for:

  • producers
  • mixers
  • engineers
  • self-producing artists
  • serious learners working with recorded music
  • musicians shaping their own productions
  • people looking to deepen their listening and judgment

Participants do not need to be professionally established.

But the experience works best for people who are already familiar with sessions, recorded material, production choices, or the process of turning recordings into finished work.

The room is focused, practical, and collaborative.

You should be ready to listen closely, receive feedback, discuss decisions, and stay engaged with the work.

-THE RHYTHM

Teach. Listen. Work. Playback. Revise.

Teach. Listen. Work. Playback. Revise.

The retreat follows a concentrated studio rhythm.

Teaching sessions introduce the focus of the day. Guided listening gives participants a shared reference point before entering the work. From there, small groups move into practical studio sessions built around decision-making, comparison, and revision.

The rhythm includes:

  • instruction
  • guided listening
  • small-group work
  • playback
  • critique
  • revision
  • evening discussion

The pace is immersive, but not frantic.

The goal is to create enough structure for meaningful progress and enough space for participants to actually hear what is changing.

-THE STUDIO

A room built for decisions.

The studio gives the retreat its center.

Participants return to the same listening environment each day, allowing decisions to be heard, compared, revised, and understood over time.

This continuity matters.

When everyone hears the same material in the same room, the conversation becomes more precise. Differences are easier to locate. Choices become easier to discuss.

The work stops being theoretical.

You hear what changed.

-TUSCANY

An environment built for concentration.

The retreat takes place inside the Sonic Alchemy creative environment in the hills of Tuscany.

Participants live and work within the same shared rhythm throughout the residency: listening, mixing, producing, eating, discussing, revising, and returning to the studio with clearer ears.

The environment remains quiet, grounded, and focused.

Tuscany supports the process through pace, atmosphere, architecture, and distance from interruption.

Not as escape.

As attention.

-MENTORS

Guidance from people who listen for the record.

Mentors guide the retreat through teaching, listening, feedback, and practical studio work.

The focus is not performance or theory.

It is helping participants hear what the record needs, understand why certain choices work, and develop stronger judgment inside the process.

Throughout the residency, mentors support the group through playback discussions, technical guidance, production perspective, and close attention to how decisions affect the final shape of the music.

Dorian Britton

Composer, Producer, Founder of Sonic Alchemy

Dorian works across composition, production, recording, and mixing with a strong emphasis on listening, perspective, and artistic judgment. His work throughout the retreat focuses on helping participants understand how technical decisions shape emotional impact, balance, movement, and the overall identity of a record.

Throughout the week, he works closely with participants through playback sessions, mix critique, guided listening, and small-group development, helping producers and artists strengthen their process without relying on formulas, trends, or overly rigid workflows.

-FAQ

Practical details.

Is this more about mixing or production?

Both, but always in service of the record.

The retreat focuses on the space where production and mixing overlap: arrangement density, sonic direction, balance, vocal placement, movement, transitions, and emotional focus.

The goal is not to separate the roles too neatly.

It is to help participants make stronger decisions about what the song needs after recording.

Is transportation included?

Transportation is not included. Guidance for airports, trains, and local arrival will be provided after acceptance.

Are accommodations private?

The residency includes a mix of private and shared room configurations across the property.

Some rooms are designed for single occupancy, while others may accommodate a couple sharing one larger bed.

Room requests can be discussed during the application process.

Will this help me make better decisions under pressure?

Yes. A major part of the retreat is learning how to hear priorities faster and with more confidence.

Mixing and production often become difficult when everything feels equally important. This retreat helps participants separate the essential from the distracting: what should lead, what should support, what needs revision, and what may simply need to be left alone.

The goal is stronger judgment inside the moment. Not just more knowledge after the fact.

What happens after I apply?

Applications are reviewed personally. Accepted participants receive additional details and next steps directly.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellation details and payment schedules are shared during enrollment.
