Music for Story, Not Just Sound

Original composition for film and visual work, shaped with attention to narrative, pacing, and emotional clarity.

-Built around story

Composition for Film and Visual Work

Dorian Britton is a composer working across film, documentary, and visual media, creating original music that is built around story.

The work is guided by a simple principle: music should not compete with the image. It should deepen it. That requires sensitivity to timing, structure, tone, and the emotional undercurrent of a scene.

Each project is approached as a collaboration. One where the music is shaped in direct response to the film, not applied on top of it.

-Every film has its own rhythm

A Story-Led Approach to Composition

Every film carries its own internal rhythm and its own sense of breath, tension, and release. The role of the score is to work with that rhythm, not override it.

Composition at Sonic Alchemy begins with listening. Listening to the director, to the material, and to what the film is actually asking for. From there, the process becomes one of careful alignment. Of finding the tone, palette, and musical language that belongs to the piece.

Some projects call for restraint and space. Others need movement, contrast, or structural weight. In every case, the goal is the same. To support the story with clarity, intention, and musical judgment.

This is not about imposing a sound. It is about discovering the right one.

-Different Projects require different palettes

Tone, Texture, and Range

Dorian’s work draws from a broad musical foundation, allowing for flexibility without losing coherence.

The palette can move between:

  • intimate and expansive
  • acoustic and hybrid
  • lyrical and textural
  • structured and atmospheric

Underneath that range is a consistent sensibility: a focus on tone, balance, and emotional precision.

The result is music that feels considered rather than generic—adaptable to the needs of the film, while still carrying a clear point of view.

-From conversation to delivery

The Process

1. Initial Conversation
We begin with the film, the intent, and the role music should play within it.

2. Direction & Spotting
Together, we define where music enters, where it holds back, and how it supports the structure of the piece.

3. Composition & Refinement
Themes, textures, and cues are developed and shaped through a collaborative feedback process.

4. Delivery
Final score is delivered cleanly and to spec, ready for integration into the project.
